Many Austrian composers remained true to the Viennese musical tradition in American exile, but at the same time were influenced by their new surroundings. While Arnold Schönberg soon became established in his exile in California, Erich Zeisl’s life was marked by internal and external opposition. He was held in high esteem by the most significant composers of his era, yet his compositions were and are hardly ever performed. Marking the first recording of numerous songs by Erich Zeisl on NAXOS, this CD presentation invites its audience on a journey across lesser-known terrain that is well worth discovering.
